Joan McAlpine MSP has welcomed the Scottish Government’s launch of a new South of Scotland Enterprise and Skills Agency to boost growth in our region.
The Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Jobs and Fair Work Keith Brown MSP announced the launch during a site visit with Kite Power Systems.
Commenting, Ms McAlpine said:
“I am absolutely delighted to welcome the launch of a regional enterprise and skills agency for the South of Scotland.
“I’m particularly pleased that this agency will be modelled on Highlands and Islands Enterprise – whose own success has turned around the economic fortunes of communities in the highlands and islands.
“This is a model I’ve pushing for over a number of years, both when I was a member of the Economy Energy and Tourism Committee during the last parliament and in my own submission to the Scottish Government’s review on enterprise and skills agencies.
“This new agency will be capable of providing dedicated support which meets the distinct needs of our region. It could completely transform the local economy.
“I have consistently argued that a South of Scotland enterprise agency should be more focussed on supporting smaller companies, and helping to achieve community development as well as growth. I’m delighted that the SNP Scottish Government has taken these points on board.
“This is a real turning point for the South of Scotland.”
