South Scotland SNP MSP Joan McAlpine this week met with the Dumfries and Galloway group Bump Baby and Beyond to promote the advantages of the baby box as it emerged that ten thousand parents across Scotland have already registered to receive one.
The MSP took was a sample of the type of things that are provided in the baby box.
Commenting, Ms McAlpine said:
“The parents of the sling library were all very positive about the box and its contents.
“The Baby Boxes are full of useful items and send a message that every child matters.
"For mothers in Dumfries and Galloway looking forward to welcoming a new born into the world on or after 15th August this
summer, all they need to do to be gifted a Baby Box is apply through their midwife in advance, supplying their preferred delivery address."
The MSP was full of praise for Bump Baby and Beyond, who run a sling library for new parents. She said:
“It was great to catch up with the mums and dads of sling library whom I’ve had pleasure of meeting before.
“It’s such a fantastic initiative allowing parents to get close to their babies through proper use of slings and baby carriers with peer-to-peer support on how to use them.
“I discovered it was also a great way for new mums to make friends – there was a lovely happy atmosphere in the meeting in the Usual Place.
“The slings were particularly good for new mums and dads who already had toddlers as it allowed them to carry the baby while keeping a free hand for the wee one.
“I also had the opportunity to meet with Ally Baker from the Dumfries group of Joimove who are running local babywear dance classes. Again it is a great way to make new friends, introduce the baby to music and get your fitness back in a fun and gentle way.”
Joimove Babies Dumfries meets every Thursday 12.30-1.30 at the Old School Dance Studio.
