EVERYBODY deserves to get paid the living wage.
It is the amount calculated to allow workers to live in dignity – £7.85 an hour.
Unfortunately, it’s voluntary. Only the pitifully low minimum wage, set by the UK Government at Westminster, is legally enforceable.
Labour in government didn’t get it together to pay their own employees the living wage.
That credit goes to the SNP, the first government anywhere in the UK to pay the living wage to all workers whose pay they negotiate, such as the NHS, as well as direct employees.
What the Government cannot do is make the living wage compulsory in every Government contract with an outside firm – European Union competition law expressly forbids it.
This is the basis of the Labour lie that the SNP voted against the living wage.
