South of Scotland MSP Joan McAlpine is urging residents in Dumfries and Galloway to help some of the world’s poorest children, by taking part in Mary’s Meals “Backpack Project.”
The Backpack Project appeals to schools, clubs, businesses, churches and individuals to fill backpacks with basic educational materials to send to children receiving Mary’s Meals.
Very often families cannot afford to buy basic things like pencils and copy books, or even suitable clothes for their children to wear to school and so their children miss out on school and an education.
Commenting, the SNP MSP said;
“The Backpack Project is a fantastic initiative, and my staff and I were delighted to take part.
“Education is such a powerful tool in the fight against global poverty, and something we in Scotland often take for granted.”
“I would urge anyone who is able to take part to do so. It’s a great feeling knowing that you are helping a child who would otherwise not receive an education.
“I understand that budgets are tight, but my staff and I kept costs to a minimum, filling our backpack with second hand items, unwanted Christmas gifts and saver items.”
