THE membership of Burns clubs may be dwindling according to reports, but that’s only because we have new ways of celebrating our national poet.

Once it was a choice between drunken all-male suppers or poetry recitals in draughty church halls.

Now we have events such as the Big Burns Supper, a funky new festival in Dumfries, where Burns lived, died and wrote some of his best poems, including Tam o’ Shanter.
