The French ambassador denied that Nicola Sturgeon told her that she preferred Cameron to Miliband.
So did her consul in Edinburgh, who had given a third-hand account of the meeting to a UK civil servant, who then put it in a memo.
Yet it still appeared in the Tory-supporting Telegraph newspaper, who didn’t even bother to ask the FM or the ambassador to comment.
Senior Labour politicians were tipped off early, and began spreading the lie on Twitter before it appeared in the right-wing paper.
This whole affair stinks more than a barrel of rotting mackerel...
