Facing defeat at Westminster, the Tories were forced, quite literally, to call off the hounds.

Oscar Wilde said: “The English country gentleman galloping after a fox (is) the unspeakable in pursuit of the uneatable.”

I can certainly think of a few unspeakable individuals on the Tory benches – the ghastly, guffawing, Iain Duncan Smith who enjoys cutting the benefits of disabled people - is one.

Or the dreadful Christopher Chope, MP for Christchurch, who describes House of Commons staff as “servants” and wants to bring back conscription.
