Toxic Donald Trump could still spring a surprise

Robert De Niro said it best.

Donald Trump is blatantly stupid: “A mutt who doesn’t know what he is talking about. Doesn’t do his homework, doesn’t care.”

It was the actor’s exasperation as much as his anger, however, which struck a chord.

De Niro added: “He’s a national disaster. It makes me so angry that this country has gotten to this point that this fool, this bozo has wound up where he has.”

He is right. How could a country which elected the measured and thoughtful Barack Obama even be considering this buffoon?

The lewd terms in which Trump spoke of women in that leaked video were appalling. In fact they were criminal - he advocated sexual assault.

“When you are a star you can do anything” could have come from the lips of sex offenders such as Jimmy Savile and Rolf Harris. They thought their fame gave them license to abuse as they pleased and for years, they did.

We have no evidence Trump ever acted on his lewd words. We do know that he has a sexist view of women. That came out long before the leaked video. He called women pigs – and worse – several times.

That it took so long for senior Republicans to dump Trump reflects poorly on the party’s establishment. They all knew what he was.

Trump did not come from nowhere. He won the nomination by gaining support from real Republican voters. You only need to see his rallies, which attract thousands, to see he has considerable support.
