Last Summer I was involved in a scheme organised by the People’s Project, called the Big Clean. The idea of the scheme was to "match-make" those people eager to help out and get them together in groups to tackle Dumfries’ worst grot-spots. The Big Clean took place on the 25th of August, just before the judges from Britain in Bloom were due to visit the town.
Dumfries already has wonderful community spirit and the Big Clean was a way of using that to improve the town. Everyone rolled up their sleeves and tackled a particular dirty spot that had been annoying them, and at the same time got together with friends, family or colleagues.
It was great to hear that Dumfries was awarded the Large Town Silver Gilt from Britain in Bloom, and I have no doubt that our efforts played a large part in that.
