NOBODY works harder than those delivering social care in the community

Home care workers are low paid – but should be highly valued. They help old and frail people. They also help the terminally ill and disabled stay out of hospital and residential accommodation.

Make no mistake, home care workers, and those they look after, are the big winners in the SNP budget John Swinney will present to the Scottish Parliament today.

He has offered an additional £250million package for care – which includes money to ensure all care workers get paid the living wage of £8.25 an hour.

This offer comes despite Scotland’s budget from the UK reducing by almost £4billion – or 12 per cent – during the years of Tory rule from Westminster.

Overall, the extra £250million for health and social care means a reduction to council budgets of around one per cent – surely manageable when you consider the overall cuts from London.
