McAlpine Welcomes Cash Boost For Local Clubs

South of Scotland MSP Joan McAlpine has welcomed new funding for Annan Athletic FC and Greystone Rovers YFC through a Scottish Government scheme – which will help to encourage physical activity in the local area.

This new funding comes as part of the Scottish Government’s Legacy 2014 Sustainable Sport for Communities Fund, designed to support sport-related social enterprises, enabling them to become sustainable in the long run and help people become more physically active.

Commenting, Ms McAlpine said:

“This investment is excellent news for Dumfriesshire and I congratulate both Annan Athletic and Greystone Rovers on their awards, which will allow them to continue the excellent work they do encouraging people across our community to get more active.

“Glasgow 2014 was an incredible spectacle – without a doubt the best Commonwealth Games ever which put Scotland on the map and this fund is a key part of ensuring that Scotland continues to benefit from the legacy of last summer’s games.

“Today’s new investment shows the success of the Scottish Government in ensuring that the Games legacy continues to pay dividends in our community – and I am looking forward to seeing the positive impact the funding will make.”

Annan Athletic FC Chairman, Henry McClelland commented:

"We are delighted to have been awarded £19200 from the Legacy 2014 Sustainable Sport for Communities Fund.

“A design and feasibility study can now be undertaken for a Community Hub; we are looking forward to working with all our stakeholders to ensure our proposal further enhances the clubs commitment to the local community.

“Annan Athletic already offer much more than 'senior football' on a Saturday afternoon - the community hub is a project already on the Annan Regeneration Masterplan. The project includes a number of 'spokes' from a major redevelopment of the Victoria/Market Halls complex.

“We know that football clubs at our level are very proactive when it comes to community engagement. The Commonwealth Games Legacy is being shared across the country. It has been our vision to take our community involvement to a different level - that vision can be our legacy.”
